Viruses Took My Health Away | Oral and Systemic Virology Through Punk

Rock the Board!6回視聴投稿日: 2026/11/06
A fast punk mnemonic connecting selected viruses with oral, systemic, and vaccine-preventable disease. Listen with the synchronized lyrics and use the notes below as the academic study companion. The song is a memory aid, not a diagnostic or treatment guide. ACADEMIC BACKGROUND HERPESVIRUSES HSV-1 commonly causes oral herpes and can present as primary gingivostomatitis or recurrent herpes labialis; HSV-1 and HSV-2 can each infect oral or genital sites. HSV-2 is more often associated with recurrent genital herpes. VZV causes primary varicella (chickenpox), remains latent in sensory ganglia, and may reactivate as herpes zoster (shingles). EBV (HHV-4) infects B cells and is a common cause of infectious mononucleosis; EBV is also associated with oral hairy leukoplakia, especially with immunosuppression. CMV (HHV-5) can cause congenital disease and, in severe immunosuppression, end-organ disease such as retinitis. HHV-6B is the main cause of roseola; HHV-7 can cause a similar illness less often. HHV-8 (KSHV) is associated with Kaposi sarcoma and other malignancies, with clinically important disease in immunocompromised people. OTHER VIRUSES IN THE SONG High-risk HPV types can cause cervical cancer and some oropharyngeal cancers; the ADA distinguishes the oropharynx (including tonsils and the base of the tongue) from the oral cavity. HBV can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma; vaccination prevents HBV infection. HIV targets CD4 cells and, if untreated, can progress to AIDS. Oral findings may occur with HIV but are not diagnostic by themselves. Measles, mumps, and rubella are separate viruses, not herpesviruses; MMR vaccine protects against all three. DENTAL CONNECTION The ADA discusses oral manifestations associated with HIV, hepatitis viruses, head and neck cancer, and cold sores. Patients with HIV can receive routine dental care; clinicians use standard precautions for every patient and individualize care to the person's medical status.
